What is Yoga Therapy?

The International Association of Yoga Therapists defines yoga therapy as “a process of empowering individuals to progress toward improved health and well-being through the application of the teachings and practices of yoga”.

Yoga therapy uses the tools and techniques of yoga  (movement, breathing practices, deep relaxation and meditation techniques) to focus on an individual’s or small groups needs.   Practices are adapted to the client’s particular health issues, schedules and frequency of visits.

Yoga therapists do not diagnose health issues.  The goals of a yoga therapist include working with healthcare professionals who have diagnosed medical issues and consider yoga to be a complementary therapy.  Yoga therapists will also listen to individuals concerns and work with them to teach them practices that they can do on their own.
