What is Yoga Therapy?
Yoga therapy uses the tools and techniques of yoga (movement, breathing practices, deep relaxation and meditation techniques) to focus on an individual’s or small groups needs. Practices are adapted to the client’s particular health issues, schedules and frequency of visits.
Yoga therapists do not diagnose health issues. The goals of a yoga therapist include working with healthcare professionals who have diagnosed medical issues and consider yoga to be a complementary therapy. Yoga therapists will also listen to individuals concerns and work with them to teach them practices that they can do on their own. Here are some of the health issues that I have had positive results with using yoga and mindfulness techniques:
- ADD & ADHD
- Anger Management
- Memory Issues
- Panic Attacks
- Chronic Pain
- Cancer Recovery
- Back Pain
- Multiple Sclerosis
- High Functioning Autism
- Rheumatoid Arthritis
The movements, breathing exercises, relaxation and meditation techniques are helpful for improving:
- Overall stress response (immune, endocrine and nervous system all working together)
- Sleep issues
- Strength & Flexibility
- Physical and Mental Balance
- Digestive Issues
- Focus & Concentration
- Joint Health
- Weight Management
- And more…
Individual Yoga Therapy
A private yoga therapy session can be just one session, a series of sessions or on-going sessions depending on the needs of the client. The first session includes an assessment as well as recommended beginning practices. A client will complete a Client Information Form and submit this to the therapist prior to the session or bring it with them to the session. The client and therapist discuss the information on the form. A yoga therapist does not diagnose health issues. Based on the information on the form and the discussion, the therapist chooses a series of movements, breathing practices and relaxation and/or meditation techniques for the client.
“I started taking private yoga lessons with Nancy to work on my anxiety and stress. After every session I felt better and better. Yoga therapy gives you the tools to control how to react to stressful situations and how to let it go… how to slow your mind and balance your energy levels. Nancy takes the time and cares about you, she loves to help people by using her knowledge and skills. It was amazing how I was able to feel much better after each therapy session and I was able to get rid of the traditional medicines.” ~ Paula

“My journey with Nancy began with a recommendation from my neuropsychologist for memory recall. When I started I thought yoga was just a series of exercises but I quickly learned that it is so much more. The deep breathing, relaxation, gentle poses and so much more began to not only help my memory but give me multiple gains physically. I came in barely lifting my right leg and now it is back to normal function! My favorite time is the relaxation at the end and I always leave feeling better than when I came.” ~ Karen
“My friend Karen and I have been practicing gentle yoga with Nancy for almost a year. It is sooooo relaxing and renewing.” ~ Susie

“A week without Nancy, is not a good week. I’ve been practicing yoga with Nancy Sinton for more than 7 years, and I plan my days around my time with her. I tried other yoga classes, but didn’t stick with them. Once I found Nancy, I was hooked. As a 60+ year old, my body needs work on balance, flexibility and breathing techniques. Nancy offers well-balanced, no stress sessions.” ~ Clare
“Nancy’s holistic approach to yoga has taught me patience and acceptance. As a result, my physical practice has greatly improved.” ~ Wendy
“I am privileged to experience Nancy’s Healing Teaching for the past four years, and I am grateful for her newest class at Elevate Yoga Center – Healing Through Yoga and Sound. I encourage you to attend this class and understand for yourself Nancy’s Loving Presence and Joy! Thank you, Nancy, for Blessing and Healing our Lives!” ~ LW
“Nancy is extremely knowledgable and caring. She tailored each of our individual sessions based on my needs and requests and her gentle guidance and attention to my limitations was much appreciated. Nancy wasn’t daunted when I began by telling her that although I was there because I’ve been told I could benefit from yoga, it wasn’t something I enjoyed. Because of Nancy, I have made amazing strides in my balance and flexibility and I now truly love yoga :)” ~ LR
